Cool Accidental catch

Took a mate fishing for his 1st time this weekend at scout Dyke resevoir and although he had to resort to fishing a booby with a fixed spool to catch his trout.

He did have a catch on his fly rod even with his impression of a lion tamer, a 3lb 2 ounce perch ounce perch !! quite impressive for a 1st ever fish id say on the funny side its the luckiest perch ever as he had already seen me dispatch a rainbow, and as he was fishing away from me the poor fish came within a second of its life as i grabbed the priest from his hand. Much to his annoyance and voicings of "You said i could kill 2 trout for my tea!!!"

wouldnt mind but hed already seen my rainbow, maybe he just though his perch was some strange mutant trout!

Easily the biggest perch I have ever seen, thought it was a pike when i saw it roll on the surface.

Hmmm very intresting.

I will have to enquire whether or not they can be killed at scout dyke, I know the place is teaming with them up to 1lb and everyone is moaning about them. I will have to ask about taking a couple and try them.

Just watch now, I wont see another perch for months, when im actually trying to catch em.

I concur, a few years ago this size of fish would have been unheard of.

I wouldn't dream of killing a 3lb perch or anything approaching this weight.

I was just simply meaning, next time I deep hook a smaller one i may take it just to see if they make good eating.

I dont share the opinion of many of the people fishing this water that perch are vermin. The big ones fight doggedly and provide good sport on light fly gear.

Infact give me a 1lb perch over a 1lb freshly stocked rainbow, for a fight any day. Fresh stockies just seem confused and dont fight

My grandfather used to cook and eat Perch and Pike as well as Trout and Salmon.

The Perch was gorgeous pan fried in butter with herbs, salt and pepper. I think they were between 1/2 and 3/4 lb and were really easy to fillet. Well worth a try.

He made Pike into either a fish stew or a fish pie using small ones of around 3 lbs. I think they were soaked overnight in water with lemons in it.
