Default Carp Conundrum

Hi all

Have a few questions regarding carp on fly.

Have found a water stocked to 30lb plus, and spent a couple of hours on it yesterday evening trying to tempt a carp out. However try as I might I could not get one to take an imitative pattern, as they seemed preoccpied with the dog biscuits that no doubt go in to the water in volume.

Any tips on how to resolve, or patterns that might resemble such as a last resort? Refuse to go down the gluing a biscuit on a hook route!

Also I struggled to cast effectively due to the pool haveing a very close wooded perimeter, this put a lot of the feeding fish out of range as I struggled to cast more than 10 feet. Any tips on casting further for a novice when there is no backcast available?

Watching the big carp cruise round the fly was heart stopping stuff and I would love to winkle one out!

you could always hair rig a dog biscuit instead, or use a deers hair imitaion of such. But i reckon a hair rigged dog biscuit would do the trick especially if thats what you have seen them taking.

Ive no doubt about that - they were feeding on them recklessly!

However I really want to take one on a "fly" rather than a biscuit.

your best bet would be a deer hair dog discuit then, similar to this

available here http://www.sovereignsuperbaits.co.uk...arp_flies.html

I know its not technically a fly but it will do what you want.

Completely agree with this.

Also if you can get them in "white deer hair" even better.

Get some casting lessons and a good instructor will teach you the roll cast and also the jump roll cast so you will be able to cover most distances that an overhead cast can.

Granty and Tom have hit the nail on the head there, sound advice.
On one of my local ponds I have the same problem, with there being no back cast. It's kind of a "if the mountain won't come to Mohhamed" moment in reverse. If your feeding dog biscuits bring the fish in close by casting first then loose feed after. I know loose feeding and fly fishing don't go down well in some quarters. But for me it's a great way of building confidence.

Hope this helps

Sean

Very helpful all.

Most helpful is it looks like a situation that provides an excuse and "boot up backside" to improve both the quality and diversity of my casting.

Cue much swotting up on roll/jump roll casting.

Tried the 'dog biscuit' and 'floating bread ' carp flies. Didn't work that well - however the thread on this forum "Carp Surface flies" Carp surface flies gave me lots of ideas !

Good luck,

Nigel

try glugging your fly in a dip, pineapple, scopex, strawberry etc. it will give off added attraction and can often draw the fish to the hookbait rather than the other way around if your struggling to get near them on the cast.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Am being treated by a sympathetic friend who watched with some amusement at my last efforts to get a line to the required place in the close confines to some casting tuition. I have booked my in with Vic Knight who will hopefully get my roll casting sorted, and providing I can apply myself on the day hopefully start to show me some single handed spey or at least start me on the road which is just the ticket.

Cheers

Ian
