I like big buoyant flies like sedges and elk hair caddis. They can't seem to resist one of those floating over their heads.

I had my first go at them over the weekend and I'd like to catch some more.
Amazingly shy and cautious, I cast small natural looking nymphs at them like pheasant tails, though we did try a red glow-bug to imitate berries!

If your stream is overgrown try a leaded Beetle pattern. This can be deadly. It's the plop that gets them.

Would agree with that Ernie. Chub are great responders to noise, a terrestrial pattern dropped into a likely looking hole under a bush or treeline would be a good approach. Have had great joy freelining slugs in this fashion and it is definately the "plop" that precipitates a good take.

On the fly side I have also had joy with the species using daddies and hoppers.

I agree, can't wait to have another go.
Flyinmieye and I had a go for them with the dry a few weeks back, and they came to pink parachutes very well.
As you say steve, very shy and spooky, but great fun.

Can be tricky little fellows to catch on a fly though they will often take what the trout are munching on.
It's worthwhile upping your leader strength as chub, whilst not fast can excert quite a lot of brute force.

This little fellow was caught on a mayfly emerger.
