They are very tricky, in this country and without chumming, I've only ever had a couple of small ones but did "*****" a monster several seasons back. I can still clearly remember the huge bow wave as it spooked off like a high speed torpedo...gutting not to have hooked up.
Slow sinking natural flies worked for me, they didn't seem interested in bloodworms that usually take the carp though?
Both of mine have fell to just a simple hare's ear spider hackled with partridge...no flash and no added weight.
They do seem to be creatures of habit often found in the exact same spot for days at a time or patroling the same course around the lake, so at least we can set a trap for them.
Used to be one under an overhanging tree, at a lake I fished, it would be in the same spot every day. Never even got a go at it, it would spook everytime before I could get a fly to it...I supose that is why we try though.

The other problem is finding them...not many lakes round here have more than one or two tops, like any species if you can find numbers it's gonna be way easier.
Good luck.
