Default wire trace

What is the best material to use for a trace for fly fishing for pike?
What about these kevlar threads are they any good?
Cheers, Graham

I used to use trace wire from drennan about 10years ago, you get in different B.S in 50/100 yard spools it was ideal for fly fishing for pike.

have you looked at the ready made traces by airflo pretty pricey but they do the job superbly,

dont think the kevlar threads would be of much use but might be wrong,

You might want to have a look at these. The benefits of Titanium coupled with a furled leader.
PS: I have to declare an interest as it is my website.
Just scroll down to Titanium Leaders

I would not use kevlar although it is very strong it is still easily cut.

I would recommend single strand titanium or a coated wire such as Surflon or Loop Pike wire. Trialled the latter recently and found it to be very good.

The benefits of the titanium are that it doesn't fray or kink - takes the knocks.

I used to use Supratress braided steel from France. However, longevity ain't good and you have to watch any fraying and replace. I now use a version of American Fishing Wire which I find to be excellent. I've had no losses and it takes a right hammering. I use Barry Reynolds' method of attaching the fly which is overhand knot snugged down, second overhand an inch up the wire. Then pass snugged down knot thru eye of hook then thru second overhand knot and snug that down. Your first knot becomes a stop knot.

If Barry can catch 50inch pike on that it is good enough for me!

BUT Dougie what are these new catches/locks like??

80 lb fluorocarbon has a following. It certainly catches more.
