Default Carp surface flies

Hi Guys,

Recently at a lake in Sussex (whilst coarse fishing....shsh...) I watched carp taking bread off the surface and the guy opposite me caught a 7 1/2 pounder that fought like crazy !

It seemed an ideal opportunity (never having caught a coarse fish on the fly) to unlimber my 9' 6/7 wt with a floating line and 10lb flourocarbon tippet and have a go.

I tried 'Dog biscuit' flies (deer hair) with flat bottoms and found that the carp were literally trying to take them but missing and knocking them into the air ! So, tried well ginked white egg flies - they floated for a while then sank but no takes.

I did notice that the bread they were taking was 'soggy' with the majority below the surface film rather than above....any ideas on a bread fly that would meet those criterea (or do I have to design one ?

Nigel

I know that this will probably raise objections, but the more advanced fly fishers that go for carp mount made up "bread" from white deerhair on a hair rig.

That way they increase their conversion rate.

Been having a go my self recently.....Ive had success using dog biscuits. Ive used spanflex tied round the bisucuit and then simply slip the hook under. .....Great fun for an hour or so after work

Enterprise tackle make plastic bread, which floats amazingly and is an artifical, after all. Its abut £3 a tub and lasts forever. It doesnt fall off if you pinch it on properly - i actually pinch it on the tippet, directly above the hook, to keep the whole hook exposed

A few years ago I watched a guy catching carp using a fly he had made out of sponge! Went over to speak to him and he explained that he just cut irregular shapes out of a yellow sponge, then ran a small plastic tube through the middle and tied the hook on below so that it was exposed. Seemed to work as I watched him take three or four carp in less than an hour.

How about white marabou wrapped round the hook with a white foam shellback - just made this up but it could work !

If the Carp are ignoring bread on the surface and are taking soggy bread that is half-submerged(sub-surface) perhaps you could devise a white, fluffy marabou fly but with the addition of some sort of parachute hackle like a Klinkhammer?Of course the hackle would have to masked as it would make the 'bread' it is imitating look nnatural, but the marabou would do this?
The marabou when wet would also have the exact texture and appearance as soggy bread?
Hope this helps,
Morgan

Edit-in case you're unsure a parachute hackle causes the hook and the body below the hackle to hang underneath the surface while the top half is above.
See this photo for an example

Hang a wet bread fly off a floating breadfly on 12-18" NZ dropper.

That would be the way to go, floating bread(foam) and then a white chenile fly on the point.

Cheers, Dave.

I've heard of matching the hatch, but matching the batch? Well well
