Default Southport Canal

Well I think its nearer Ormskirk but anyway....

With the inlaws living in Southport I'm down there every now and again and noticed the above canal ( I think It's near what they call the moss), so my thinking is next time I'm down I'll maybe have a blast for a pike on the fly.

The question is, do you need a permit or will a day rod licence cover me? My experience of this kind of fishing is nil.

Cheers

Hi, I fished for Pike on there just the other week, as my daughter lives in Tarleton, and the canal runs right through the village.
Just a rod license as far as I know, but Paul, flyinmyeye, is the best to talk to.
Give him a Pm he is very helpful.

Hi crawuk,
there are only 2 canals i know of in that area leeds/liverpool and rufford both on day tickets if you are unlucky to see a bailif, but there are a few sluices that are owned by southport angling, you would need to tell me the specific area name then i can be more specific
i only know one place called moss and thats hoscar moss which is burscough and thats leeds/liverpool canal, plenty of pike in that area and big perch,
you will need a rod licence,

paul

Hi Crawuk,

If you mean the canal you cross on the road between Southport and Ormskirk (Southport Road) then it's the Leeds/Liverpool Canal, fishable by membership of Wigan and District Angling Club (£25 a year from Ted Carters, Preston, they have a website), I'm not sure whether they do day tickets though, WADAC have the stretch running from Halsall all the way through Burscough, Newburgh, and up to Parbold.

Lots of Pike running well into double figures in these sections, 8wt gear, floating line (as it's shallow), and a wire trace essential, not to mention long handle forceps and an unhooking matt. You'll pull a few carry bags out, but stick at it the pike will come, and the fly always seems to outfish the lures and dead baits on that section.

Regards,
Terry

This is the one.

The bit I'm thinking about I have seen from the wee road bridge that goes over it.

Sorry to be so vague about location, but coming from Glasgow I don't really know the area. My wife grew up in Southport but her fishing interests are nil so when I try to pick her brains I get told to shut up.

We go down maybe once a month to Southport to see her parents and I keep meaning to give this canal a blast, so now is the time.

You guys know of any decent trout rivers in the area?

Cheers for the reply's guys.

The Canal is the Leeds to Liverpool... The lower sections from around BURSCOUGH back to Liverpool also hold some big pike. This area is controlled by the Liverpool and district AA.. Day tickets are also available... The Canal also holds Carp to 30lb plus, specimen Roach, Some very creditable Bream,Tench, Perch etc..
The best Carp i saw caught and weighed was 28lb, (It was the bigger of a brace caught the same morning, the other was 24+lb ) ....The best fishing in general is on the lower stretches..
The Rufford Canal is an arm of the Leeds to Liverpool...
Stickfloat....

I'm planning on giving this a bash on Sunday. Can you give me details on where to obtain a permit near Southport?

Also best bits to fish for the pike. I plan on using my 10' 7# with a sink tip line. Would this set up be ok?

Sorry about all the questions.

Has anybody got any wire trace and a couple of flies they want to sell?

Cheers

Craw

If it's Liverpool AA normally you can get day tickets from the local tackle shops. If it's Wigan, don't bother as you won't see a bailiff Also the pike hang about around the ledges, so you get a lot under your feet.
