Default fishiing throughout winter?

I would like to know how long im going to be able to fish for after summer for course fish. Is the cold weather going to stop them from taking my flies or can i happily fish into the new year and beyond, this is excluding any closed season as i have a canal near me which is open throughout.

Will i need to change my tactics etc?

cheers Chris

Perch will still take a fly and also pike . I used to do well on the New Junction canal at Sykehouse Doncaster with tadpoles fished slow and deep near the bridges .

Here is a pic of a typical perch , we could catch a dozen like this in 1 hour even on the coldest days . Now I have left UK the secret places can be revealed ! They do shoal quite tight so keep moving till you find them . And yes, I am not averse to using an ultralite spinning rod and mini grubs occasionally .
Best of luck

right through to the start of the coarse closed season mate ,try pink nymphs/grubs/shrimps for grayling which can be caught in the coldest of weather, they will feed quite readily throughout winter as will chub .

Chub will feed so long as there's food for them, pike and perch are generally more active in cold weather. Other species can be persuaded to feed, but they'll generally stay in the deepest water.

Yes you can fly fish for coarse species through the winter but it will be harder.
Water levels will be higher and more coloured and fish will be harder to find as they shoal up tight. Know your water well find out were the bait fishermen are catching as you know fish slow down in the winter they do not feed as often.
Pike are a very good winter quarry as are perch if you can handle stripping in wet fly line in the cold with frost on the ground!

Hi Chris, check out all of my previous threads as I'm local and have fished right through the winter, on fly only, for the last few seasons, and not just for grayling or pike either!
Last winter I fished the local Leicester brooks about 30 times and only dry netted once. In other years I've fished stillwaters right through catching roach, gudgeon, bream and carp in Jan/Feb. I even broke the ice one day and still had roach and perch.
This thread will give you an idea of what I was up too last winter, if you check out the link on post #7 that will take you to a list of river fly paterns-proven over many years of coarse flyfishing.
Winter Rivers UK Style
Oh yeah and come to out fishing meetings...held on the first Tuesday of each month.
