Default 340lb Arapaima in Thailand

This put a bend in my 10wt Took about 80 mins to land. I am the one with the stupid grin.

I have just got back from 10 days in Thailand. I fished Gillham's in Krabi for 4 days and caught 2 Arapaima - 250lb and 340lb - both on a 4/0 fry pattern and within 24 hours of each other. Other species caught on the fly at Gillham's were Spotted Sorubim, Java Barb and Arawana. I also caught a lot of other species using bait methods.

Both the Arapaima were captured on film by a production company from San Francisco, who were making a prog about big fish. If I remember, I will update the post when I know when its on TV.

Barra at Boon Mar Ponds.

Thailand made a great fun fishing holiday - definitely worth bringing the fly rods along.

How did the Reel cope with the fish.

I have a few of them and love them.

Congrats on landing such big fish.

Thanks.

The reel was the 9/10 model and it coped brilliantly. The drag wasn't even on maximum setting. The drag made some howling noise, but remained consistent and smooth throughout the fights even though the reel was submerged on a couple of occaisions when I had to swim round obstructions.

Holy Schmoly

You caught that on a fly rod?

Whats the record weight of fish caught on a fly rod as that has got to be close if not the winner.

That "Spotted sorubim" looks like a hybrid to me. It looks like a cross between a red tailed catfish (Phractocephalus hemioliopterus) and another pimelodid. Do you know what by any chance?

I am not certain about this one. At Lake Monsters, Ratchaburi, I caught a Red-Tailed Catfish, an "Aisian Red-Tailed Catfish" and a "Spotted Sorubim", all within a short time of each other (on bait). They did look like seperate species. The Red-Tail has a very dry, leathery look about it. There were some similarities between what the locals called an Asian Red-Tail and the Sorubim. I will try and find out.

Hi

Thanks for the reply. I ask as I have interests in the aquatics hobby and trade. Red tailed catfish that have been crossed with other species occasionally find their way into the hobby. True red tailed cats are often crossed with a species called the tiger shovel nosed catfish as a food fish. Due to "hybrid vigour" these fish can grow to almost 6' in length and are totally unsuitable for the home aquarium, though are sometimes imported and then sold on to unsuspecting fish keepers. The asian red tailed catfish (Hemibagrus wyckioides) looks a little similar but is smaller. The fish in your picture does not look like a true red tailed cat. It's head is too elongated, but it's not been crossed with a tiger shovelnose either, and I'm curious to see what the fish farms have been creating in the far east. Can I post your picture on a fish keepers forum to see if anyone has come across any of these please?

Great fish by the way.

MJ
