Default pike wire trace

guys ......

I was pike fly fishing with my 10ft 8 weight trout rod on monday for the first time ..... I bought the standard wire trace [ clip on 1 end swivel on the other ] that i usually would use for my plugs and spinners etc . I then put a 1ft of 12lb mono from my fly line to the swivel on the wire trace then clip onto the fly ....

is this right ? and can anyone advise ?

JJ,

cheers fot the link , just read through that and went to anothe rlink about pike fly fishing .... to be honest im just gonna keep using the set up iv got ! I just wanted to see other opinions , just dont want to rig up ma gear for pike only . This way its easy just to set up between trout and pike without altering my fly line and loop [ saying that its not proven tested yet as i blanked ]

I use a multi-strand knotable wire myself. I've found that with the added weight of swivels a shop bought crimped or whipped trace can come unstuck, thankfully this never happened in a fish, but on the cast - several times. Since that experience I stopped using them.
The added benefit is a little less weight on the cast. I just leave the traces on the flies - so just clip the mono off and tie on the new trace with the fly I want attached. I also use 20lb mono from fly-line to trace - around 4-5ft. I find that a longer leader lenght helps smooth out the jerks you get casting a heavy fly, and the jerks are what kills the line speed.
That's just my set up though, eveyone finds a way that suits them best.

Default Wire trace

I started off with a Rio Toothy Critter leader which comes with a wire trace already tied on, and haven't found any reason to try anything different.
It casts well but my only slight reservation is that it does need a bit of a straighten each time I use it (I don't leave it on the reel, but remove it and put it back in the packet - mainly because the clip on the business end doesn't go through the rod eyes too well).

I use 20lb Savage Gear knotable wire. My traces are approx 9" with a perfection loop at either end. I loop to loop the trace onto a 9', 20lb flourocarbon tapered leader on a Striper taper WF9F. As the wire is nylon coated, it doesn't cut the leader. The fly is connected via a snap link.

I make two loops in the wire and then melt the wire using a lighter - in one of the loops i put a snap link - i then dab a little epoxy on the ends to make it neat - this can then be looped onto leader.

Hope that helps!

i use surflon knottable wire from ET tackle and its class. used to use proleader but surflon is more durable. i use a genie rig clip to attach my fly to the trace.

works for me

I've been using 20lb line connected to Tyger Wire. The setup has been ok.

This week I've been thinking 'would it be possible to land a pike just using the 20lb line and use that as a leader'?
