Default 30lb pike off North Corrib

Returning after two days stalking North Corrib Pike on the kayak...
Broke my favorite Snowbee Deep Blue 10wt at the base putting to much pressure on a hen of 35 pound plus... my fault the centre of gravity on the yak is so much lower that you have to be careful how much muscle you put on the b*tch... never mind out again tomorrow with the 9wt all the wiser I love this lake!

Cheers

Brent.

No guys sorry I lost her but I promise she was BIG...

I only post when I have something worthwhile to say but I returned home to Oughterard trembling! Next time... sometimes it's nice to get a good beating on the water! My brother who is a Marine biologist and works for the fisheries board (keen spinning man) was out with me last year and can tell the weight of fish very well... was with me stalking large pike on the North of Corrib shores and we saw fish tearing into shoals of perch and sinking lilly pads and reeds in their path!

One we estimated one well into the 30's from the thick back and wake she pushed through the water... remember on Corrib these pike are hammering rud, perch and bream to 3 pounds in some bays. The best I've had on the fly is 27 pound and she regurgitated a bream of 3 pound on being netted!

I will post some pics when I get the ******!

Glad to see the netting hasn't killed them all off. Corrib is a magical water to be on, and quite a setting to catch any fish on, let alone a 30.

Thanks Dougie and JJ you always know there's a pint, a bit of flyfishing and a bed for all you good Irish and Scottish folk with this kiwi here in Oughterard!

From a couple of articles I've written on Guiding Pike FF for magazines in Ireland, Auz and NZ about the great Corrib pike on the fly... just to back my story up... lads nothing nicer than being taken to the backing by a laviathone of a fish and when she's gets angry melts your drag and leaves your rod splinters... you flare at the nostrils look at the heavens and know on this day your beaten by natures finest! Last time it happened to me was a big dirty kingfish back home round the back of the pylons

The sort of oceanic fish my beloved 10wt was taking before it got smashed never mind!

Off the kayak 12 pounds enough to turn the kayak 180 degrees... bring on 30 pounds and make me a pike corrib b!tch!

Brent,

Its seems strange that 3 out of 4 of these fish have quite alot of blood coming from there gills, Is this common with pike and SW fish as I have never fly fished for either?

Mick.

Cheers for the offer Brent.. I will definately take you up on that at some stage. Give me a shout if you have a day free. I'll probably be putting a boat on corrib shortly.. And the few pints sounds like a great plan
