Default Rudd

Does anyone have experience catching rudd on the fly in still water. Tried yesterday with a bead head below a dry fly New Zealand style. Got the rudd to take the bead head but couldn't hook up despite trying as soon as the dry dissappear or waiting a second or two. Advice please

French Red simply the best

Run a search on the this forum as it has been covered before. I nomally use a a GHRE pattern with an indicator as the takes are very suttle.

They can be very hard to hook. In Summer evenings I go after them occasionally and hook about half on very small bead heads or dries, small and sparse seems to get into the mouth a little easier. Saying that float fishing with maggots is no guarantee, the little blighters like to run away from the shoal with the bait half in their mouth

Rudd can be difficult at times as they can spit out a fly in a second without any sign on the line. Keep at it new zealand style sounds about right, use a very fine line on the nymph .12 or .10 and keep in contact.
Small pheasent tail nymphs work well size 16 or 18, just keep at it you will eventualy hook one.

Hello Flybox

For bright sunny days small dry black midge patterns on a 12-14 hook do the trick.Rudd have a very small mouth so the key is small hook size,on saying that iv'e caught bigger with a black and silver zebra midge emerger tied on a size ten.
