A mate of mine called today, to tell me he'd just had a couple of carp from his local lake....DOING IT PROPERLY!
"Real" flies without bait in winter.
Sorry to shout but if you always reach for the bait bucket you'll never learn to catch without it. Do you "chum up" trout or grayling?
If you use watercraft and a bit of stealth you can often find a carp, or two, to sight cast a real nymph infront of, even in winter...given mild conditions, like at the moment.
Before even begining to fish walk, slowly, around the lake and have real good look into any sheltered, still or shallow areas. You'll be amaized how often fish can be spotted, especially in the furthest spots from the car park, where no one can be bothered to walk to!
When the carp first hit the surface, after winter, they are at their easiest to fool on a real nymph, so don't waste the spring (winter) oportunities.
As to flies: any slow sinking pattern may be taken. I've had them on buzzers, dawl bach, hairs ear nymphs, small damsels, various spiders, tadpoles (with very light weight beads) and bloodworms (most effective by far)
One fish without bait will give you more satisfaction than 100lb of fake ones.
