Default Walthamstow

Does anyone fly fish the coarse ponds at Walthamstow? I've searched the forum but there doesn't seem to be much on this. Do you think it's worthwhile or would I be better off on the Thames?

Any thoughts on what set up to use etc also much appreciated.

Alan

They're a bit bigger than ponds.

I fish the coarse reservoirs and the Copper Mill stream that runs between them quite a bit for pike. But I've never had anything from any of the reservoirs only the stream, from which I've had a few reasonable fish.

I'm not sure what fish you're looking for. The coarse boys that are fishing are pretty focused on the carp, but I never seem to see anyone catching anything. I believe that it's known as a headbanger of a venue. They're certainly all fishing off at distance. If carp are on your mind I'm not sure that it would lend itself to fly-fishing. However come the summer it might be worth throwing some dog biscuits and seeing if anything comes up for them.

An issue at Walthamstow is the cormorants which have apparently decimated the coarse fish stocks. I always tend to takes things like this with a pinch of salt, but there are certainly cormorants around.

One interesting option is that one of the coarse reservoirs also has quite a few trout (Upper Maynard I think), which you can fish for on the coarse ticket.

I've seen carp taking floating dog bikkies on one of the ressies. Definately worth a campaign, IMO.

Thanks guys. I don't have any particular fish in mind, although I guess perch-sized fish will probably suit my trout rod. I am collecting the bits and pieces for my 8# and have a go at the carp / pike once that's set up.

Charl from Orvis gave me a fly he made that looks like a biscuit which he has used with success for the carp there. We'll see how that goes. I doubt I will get much results without using some amount of real biscuits though!
