Default Fly Fishing for Carp - enjoy my film

which is at http://www.visionflyfishing.co.uk/carp-on-fly.html

My fishing pal David Blacow and I made it one afternoon last year, and whilst it has been picked up on the general fly fishing forum, its rightful home is here.

Great video, perfect sunny evening, thought I might have been undergunned with a 7# rod but looks like others use the same.
Thanks for the link

I think you would have a blast fishing for carp back in my native South Africa, though we usually stalk them in the shallows, much like they do in the USA.

You would have to upgrade your tackle to about a 9wt, my mate hooked into a beast on one of our reservoirs and it smoked all 200yds of backing on the first run, down to the knot and snapped the tippet.

From the same fishery I caught 9 fish one Good Friday afternoon a few seasons back. Three were doubles (estimated) and boy did my arm hurt at the end of the session. I hesitate to think how a truly wild carp hooked in shallow water might behave. Anyone who's never caught a carp on a fly rod ought to try it at least once. But if you've ever accidentally hooked a passing train, the effect is not dissimilar!

Every carp fishery I know will also insist on using an un-hooking mat.

Looks great fun though - got to give it a go this year.

I have fished for carp quite extensively in France,,, Two years ago I had a lake to myself for two weeks caught over 30 fish in the two weeks some on conventional carp gear but some on a fly rod Greys GRxi 7/8 had fish on that to 15lb , must confess i didnt use a fly but used a small bit of artificial bread on a size 6 carp hook,,,I kid you not them things go like trains,,,,

The wild commons that are long and slim lb for lb scrap harder than any stillwater trout I have ever caught...

I'd go along with that, I've caught one about 6/7 lb at Ravensthorpe. It took the emerger on my top dropper and stripped 50m (measured later) of backing before burying itself in the weed by the dam's overflow.Fortunately I was in a boat and could motor over and release it safely. It was a shame it got weeded early on, I'd say it ran faster than any (of the few) salmon I've had on the fly.The carp spawned well at Ravo a couple of years back, and although the cormorants have been enjoying them I think enough will have grown on to make them worth targeting next year, I often see them, still shoaled up, around the dam/lodge area.Whilst groundbaiting would not be allowed they have certainly seen plenty of fisherman's sarnies....
Nice film by the way Dave, looks fun, and probably more effective than the boilie approach!
