Question Toothy VS Atlantis

Hi Guys

Im pondering a "heavy" fly rod for pike i.e 9# / 10# looking at cheap and cheerful fior starters ive heard good things of the Toothy critter rod and equally good things of the Shakey Atlantis

Wondering how you guys rate them ?

Been thinking on 9#/10# reel too, greys GRXi ? what others should i be looking at ?

Ron Thompson make a very good fly rod for the money, match this with an Okuma Airframe reel and you will have a good setup.
Look for Ron thompson Mpx fly rod, you can get both rod and reel as a kit from fastmail flies.

I use the ron thomson rod and you know what????? I love it!
I can throw out full lines with it and im no expert caster, its handled fish nudging double figures and is very well finished for the price. I have the older model but the new one has a sexier reel seat, the blank looks and feels more or less the same.
I've been thinking about getting a new pike rod for a while now but to be honest i dont see the point, the rod i have does all i could ever ask of it, being 4-piece its very handy aswell.

Forgot to say in the last post, the Ron thomson rod is an #8/9.
Another reel to consider is an okuma slv, looks pretty sexy, spare spools are only 10/15 quid and its very light. I got mine for £40 which i think is the rrp.

Another thumbs up for Ron Thompson MPX!!! I know someone who makes blanks and they thought it a nice rod... I was also advised to put a 10 weight line on it and TBH it is a dream! Oh I have the Airframe, again good reel for the money and spare spools are cheap... my 10 weight line is on something bigger tho

Personally I would avoid the Toothy Critter rod. Most of the cheap Shakespeare rods are fine.

I use Vision Koma reels and they are fine. Any large arbor 7 - 9 sized reel would do. The Snowbee's are excellent.

Hope this helps.

Hi Guys

Thanks for the input and info im looking for a rod to cast my new flies ive tied on 4/0 hooks

See link:

Out of interest i see on GAC web site they have Ron Thompson MPX pike 8/9# and a MPX salt 8/9# they have different part numbers ???

Can i ask as to why one should avoid the Toothy critter

Yes i like shakey rods always found them cheap but get the job done. Although now i see the MPX is a 4pc im very interested.

So you reckon the MPX chucks a 10# line ok ??

Casting flees tied on 4/0 with the MPX loaded with WF10F is a doddle... try and get a Cortland 333 ProPike as it is cheaper than the new one.... O'Reilly has it in... I bought mine (MPX Pike) from GAC but I'm sure O'Reilly would do a deal on a kit as well!

Both the pike and saltwater rods are the same just different colour and graphics....

Oh and that setup will cast that big tandem in my blog!!!
