Default Fly fishing in barbados

Can anyone give me some advice regarding Saltwater fly fishing in Barbados.
I am going over there for a week in late November and will take a rod.
I thought it may be possible to try fishing off the rocks at the hotel for an hour or so in the evening or at first light. I am not after monsters, just a little relaxing with rod in hand. I will be taking a AFTM 7-8 rod with a couple of small boxes of lures. I was thinking of using 20lb leader. Any suggestions or thoughts please?

Kirky

On a leisure trip with friends we saw fishermen in the marinas catching mullet with bread, this could be a possibility with bread flies, there were huge schools of them.
We took a half day on a sport boat and got into some wahoo ("kingfish" to the locals) up to 25lb, though not on the fly (trolled baits and konaheads). Would be a blast on the fly, but expensive and I don't think your 7/8 weight would be up to it!

Hadn't thought about mullet! could be worth a try. i was hoping there would be some reef fishing off the beach for 2-3lb fish. as is said, i'm not after monsters but a little bit of fun.

Hi mate, not sure how the fishing is over there, but would have thought if you take some clouser minnows, deceivers and some crazy charlies you'd have some fun of some sort.even if just small snapper, everything pulls like a train out there so good luck

Thanks Cowie, I'll take a selection of Flies with me.
Maybe catching fish on the fly is uncommon out there, but it never hurts to try! could be worse could be in Southampton in the cold!!!!

Greetings from Barbados.

In over six years here I have never seen anyone fly-fishing from shore - or even from a boat. That does not mean that it does not occur occasionally or that you should not try it.

There is quite a bit of shore fishing in the South East of the island, around what is known as Atlantic Shores - where I live. Much of it is bait fishing with sea cockroach and squid. Occasionally I've seen fish caught to small spinning tackle which suggests that a fly lure could work. You would need to find rocks with a bit of a drop off to the ocean. There are one or two such spots on Atlantic shores. Snapper, what they call "covally" and a myriad of small fish (local names) are around. Occasionally a barracuda comes in.

There is no flats fishing per se and wading is difficult and dangerous. The reefs are quite far out. Big seas, new moon, early and late would be best. Too hot at other times. Go to Carters Fishermen's Corner in Bridgetown for information re weather and tides but they will know nothing about fly fishing.

Thank you Cothi.
The reason for the trip to Barbados is primarily a business trip with customers, but I will have plenty of time to relax and hopefuly fish!
We are to be based in the Speightstown area, is there any fishing up there?

Yes I think so but if I were you I'd forget it, chill and lime in The Fish Pot.
