Default Not so well known species

Let's try a thread with pictures of fish which is not a popular or target specie for fishing, but are interesting as well.

I will start with this little fish, it is not targeted by anglers, but sometimes can be cought during flyfishing for trout or grayling.

Don't know the english name.

Latin name: Leuciscus souffia agassizi

The latin name rules out the Bleak. But rules out the dace as well(Leuciscus Leuciscus) ???

Dace family, from the looks of it, but not a variety we have over here.

And what an astonishing website - I only just discovered that. Apparently, that fish is known as a Blistavec in Slovenia, while we'd call it a Vairone, if we had any anyway!

Yes that is blistavec, it isn't dace, or bleak. Dace is called klenic in slovene and bleak is zelenika.

Default Varione

It's a subspecies of the Varione; now on the international protected 'red list'.

I think some call it the 'Souffia Chub'. I'll see what my reference books say when I get home ( on Monday )

Data courtesy of Dr.Malcolm Greenhalgh who's book 'Freshwater Fish' covers over 160 native European species.

I included the larger Balkan Dace as it's habitat could overlap that of the 'agassizi' subspecies. I hope it was of help.

A bit of further information to add to great info provided by PiB. This is from book "Nase sladkovodne ribe" by Meta Povz and Boris Sket.

The living area of agassizi subspicie is marked with blue:

One of the best fish i have fished for on the fly is an Ide. I have them to 7 pounds in a loch near me and the larger fish will take small lure type flies, with traditionals like Zulus and Black Pennels doing well. They will also take dry flies with great glee

I use a 3-5 weight rod depending on the wind and they will put up a tremendous fight

Here is my mate ian with one of about 2.5 pounds.

Default blistavec

Interesting picture - I caught a few of these fish last week on the River Dunajec in Poland while targetting trout on small nymphs - wondered what they were ! I also caught another unknown to me species of coarse fish which looked very similar to a 4 oz Roach except that above the lateral line the fish had a gold coloured band. Lovely looking fish.

Great catch, ide has been my wish for a long time, unfortunately, they are not present in my local rivers, but they are present in the river i posted under Flyfishing for pike, but they have become very, very rare. Most probably due to some changes in habitat.
