The set-up i use was pretty cheap but has been producing the goods big time over the last week or so, I use the ron thomson mpx pike rod which is rated for an 8 or 9 weight, it is a beautifully finished rod for the price, 60 quid i think they go for. My mate uses the shakespeare expedition 9ft 10wt rod which he rates highly, There is also the fox pike rod which has an extra fighting handle, i think that is about £60. As for a reel i use a leeda bfr lamina reel, got it for 30 quid, comes with two spare spools so that should cover all your pike lines comfortably, the drag is nice and smooth aswell. An okuma slv would be ideal aswell, at 40 bucks they are brilliant reels for the price. As for lines, pretty much any wf trout line in sizes 8-10 should do, but guideline and scierra have pike lines that may be worth the extra bit of cash.
The real cost is in the consumables (flies and traces) shop bought pike flies are about £3.50 a pop so tying your own is a better option, and as for traces, if you buy them they are quite dear, buying a spool of trace wire, swivels and crimps is the way forward.

I got myself a Shakespeare Atlantis (salt job) in the 9ft 10wt earlier in the year, I've been very impressed with it so far....way better than it's £60 price tag and I'm used to expensive gear, owning several Sages, Hardys and a couple of Winstons.
I won't be changing it for a more expensive option in the forseeable and have pike flyfished for around 10 years now, so have used a few rods.
I was so impressed that I got the 8wt version too, which I'll be using in the salt next week and have used for some lighter pike/zander work.
Yours Dee

I would treat this review/recmendation as being as good as you could get.

Give these guys a buzz see if they can get you a 10#, used them a few times no problems and that is a lot of rod for very little money.

For a leader I use Stroft in around 7kg (i think its actually 6.8kg) tipped with tiger wire.

a good rod you can now pick up for as little as £35 is the ron thompson xps pike its a 9 weight but will chuck a 10 easy, i set my mate chris up with one last year so he could come with me and has had fish to just over 19lb and it will punch pretty big lures into the wind easily

reel wise get an okuma they are fantastic for the money and have reliable drag systems, spare spools are cheap as well

get a good intermediate line and then a floating line

some braid in either doubled up 50lb for 'big uns' or single length of 50lb braid as leader to your flies

most importantly sunglasses and a cap as it can be 'chuck n duck' if you time a cast wrong

I use okuma sensicast 15lb bs copolymer, not for any real reason though, it was the first 15lb mono i found thats all, and on the end i use a 1 1/2 ft trace made of fox carbo flex wire. friom what i hear tiger wire is great but i cant find it anywhere.
Whereabouts are you planning to fish for the pike?

GAC stock Tygerwire but it's mince in my opinion. Solid Titanium in 50lb has served me well, doesn't fray or kink.
