Default Anyone fish in the North East

Hello all,

I live in Newcastle(ish) and have been trying to find fisheries in the Tyne and Wear / Northumberland area where I can target coarse fish as a new challenge and to keep my fly fishing up through the winter months. All year trout fisheries tend to get expensive and get a wee bit tedious after a while. So far I have found out that Whittle Dene Fisheries allow fly fishing for the coarse fish, all other attempts of contacting various clubs and fisheries have been fruitless so far. I was just wondering if any of you other fine people fished up this way for coarse fish and had any suggestions, I don't mind if it's lake or river.

Many thanks

Gary

Have you tried a ticket for the river derwent for grayling, the river wear at durham has plenty of coarse fish in it also and has a free stretch on it.As for coarse fisheries themselves there are plenty around the area and why not go and chat with the owners and ask them if you can fish for them .Welcome to the forum hope you enjoy it and it helps your fishing experience. There is plenty of help here for you.

Funnily enough I'm a member of the Derwent Angling Association (well this was my first year) and have caught a few grayling which is really what prompted me to write this thread. I had thought of fly fishing for coarse fish before but never got my bum into gear to find out.

Thanks for the reply, will see if I can try and visit a couple of the fisheries. I know alot of waters round me belong to clubs and they just point blank say no to fly fishing even though I'd be willing to stump up joining fees etc!! Ah well their loss.

Nice to come across another Derwent AA member… Have you had a look at the Derwent since the weekend?

I know that Angel of the North has evening carp on the fly sessions, but it's not terribly cheap and probably not much use in the winter either. (It's also not exactly everyone's cup of tea either, mine included.)

Apart from that, I can't think of many other stillwaters that allow fly fishing. Thornborough perhaps? I've certainly never seen anyone trying, but then again I've hardly ever seen anyone else down there. Four in One membership's a great deal anyway, I'd say.

As well as the Durham free stretch, don't forget that Derwent AA's got an exchange ticket deal with Ferryhill so you can have a bash on their bit of the Wear too. They've got grayling (not as many as the Derwent though) and a fair head of decent chub and dace too.

The Wear at Durham is a great stretch. Free from the Icerink down to the river bend. Several good glides and pools.
Chub, trout, grayling, dace, roach (I believe) and pike.

Not heavily fished and well worth the effort of sussing out.

Cheers,

DH

Many thanks for all your replies. Sorry I did not reply sooner but I've been on my jollies and only got back late last night.

I think it will have to be the wear then (free section of course because I'm a skinflint). I do keep meaning to try it but for some reason always want to head up into Northumberland rather than head south. Don't know why exactly.

Can anyone confirm if there is a close season on the river? Obviously there is the trout close season and a separate close season for the course fish but is there any period of time that fishing is not allowed through out the year.

Anyhoo, once again thanks for all the responses.

Gary
