I've done a bit of modified Czech type nymphing.
Similar but generally using smaller flies....coarse fish in the Uk don't tend to hang out in the same, super fast water, as grayling so you need less weight. The swims are often deeper though so you need more weight!
I'll usually make sure the point fly is a small relatively light weight nymph/spider, this catches most of the fish, the other flies are just to get the little fly into the right zone, but do pick up odd fish.
It works best in the hottest weather and also if the venue is a little coloured. I've fished swims that never produce to the method but get the right tinge and suddenly it's a fish a chuck...for 7/8 fish anyway.
On the dangle with a heavy fly(very heavy at times) on the dropper and a spider on the point can be the best method (only method) at certain times...I've had loads of fish like this....experiment and learn what works for each swim, or even part of a swim...let alone venue!

P.S paul where/how did you get your flattie? If you start getting a few I'll want you to guide me to one!

Hi Sb Dave were have you been not heard from you in a while good to see you are back!
The river I fish is the river Hull, which is deep mud bottomed and tidal, all of the fish I have caught have been down deep.Visiblity varies and often the fish are caught close in, and often the wind is strong making casting a nightmare. So I need a method to catch the fish so I hoped czech nymping would work. Usualy upstream nymping catches one or two, but it is difficult when you cannot see the fish or see the takes.

The flattie was a small flounder caught in the river Hull, which is connected to the river Humber estuary. Apparently they can happily tolerate freshwater enviroments, and the bait fishermen have caught a few. The one I caught took a size 14 gold bead pheasent tail nymph on a 0.14 mm tippet to a 4lb leader. It is said they like to feed on small shrimps etc. It was an accidental capture, but I am happy as it is another species on the fly!

I've caught chub on red buzzers, not intentionally but you can do it.

I've fished with Ammonite Nymphs (weighted) on the River Nidd at Nun Monkton. Just tangled the fly in and had some takes, couldn't strike quick enough.

I've had one or two roach on buzzer also, at Fewston or Swinsty Res can't remember which.

I've also caught a good 5lb chub on a size 14 Snipe and Purple (one of those thickly tied bodied flies that you buy commercially).
