Default A little advice on Carp

Hi from Australia
The last 3 years I have been teaching myself saltwater fly fishing for aussie species like Bream and Aussie Salmon.
But Saturday I am going back to where I started all forms of my fishing the river Torrens .Which runs through Adelaide and the suburbs..When I was young to many years ago to remember I would catch European Carp on bread under a float .
But of course I wish to catch Carp on the fly now .I don't have nay Bread flies and am steering away from Bread due to the ducks that would swarm on it before the fish had a chance. And perhaps in a few weeks the Carp would be easier when its warmer (I know they are about bait fishers are getting them). It is supposed to be 17c Saturday .
Yes I have had some info from locals but I thought you guys may be able to add some more knowledge to my bag of tricks so to speak.
In some places the river will be moving all be it slowly in others rather fast.
Any help will be greatly appreciated

cheers
Mick

Hi Mick.

I've seen an episode on Rex Hunt's fishing show where he was sight fishing for Carp. The lake appeared very clear and the Carp were abundant. The fly that he was using was, Quote "A black Thingy". Of course this covers a multiude of flies. But it looked like a Woolly ****** size 10 long shank.

A book that might prove useful to you is Carp on the Fly by Reynolds,Brufus and Berryman ISBN 1 55566 186 6

This book has more info than you can shake a stick at. It seems that Carp will take most fly imitations. They fish (and catch) on flies as diverse as a Crayfish imitation size 6s & 8s Saltwater hooks down to a size 16 Stuart's Spider (I bet that's fun on a #4).

I got my copy off the internet (Amazon).

Hope this helps.

Ernie

Micky

Do the fish take of the surface?

I think if they are taking naturals it will be a case of "matching the hatch".

You should find the book mentioned of great use in your situation.

Look forward to hearing how you get on.

What I should have asked was is blind casting for carp better than sight fishing.Do they take flies off the surface or a wet fly.As a Saltie I am used to using big flies that sink and catch 99.99999% of my fish from blind castings .
But this will be new ground for me and there is also a chance of some natives .How the natives live in the highly polluted water is beyond me but one never knows what is about.
The book will be great but saturday is almost on me .So I will just use what I know some thing to get the fishes attention and then hopefully a fish .

Cheers
and thanks again .

Hi Mickj,
I have seen carp being taken (blind cast & sight fishng) on goldhead nymphs (Pths GHRE etc) on size 12 to 14 hooks. From experience unlike predatory fish I would not expect them to rush & grab the nymp were it to be cast away from their vacinity. The fly has to land near them. If the carp in the water that you plan to fish are used to bread or boilies then I think its going to be difficult to get them to take a nymph.

Tight lines.

Carp will take both off the top and subsurface. Both "blind and sight" seeing tactics can be used.

As with any type of fishing locating where the fish are is the main aim for you, even if you can't see them signs of feeding fish or "carpy" looking spots will be good places to start.

If you can see carp pretty high up in the water try some surface fishing, I tend to find they like a static bait off the top.

If there further down or signs they are feeding off the bottom a weighted nymph pattern should do, GRHE, PTN that kind of thing or bloodworm flies seem to do the business. Others on here recomend the wolly ****** but I have never tried them, have a search through other threads.

By the way without wanting to cause a create debate on the subject I am led to believe that if you catch carp in your rivers you have to kill them as they are classed a vermin in Oz, is this true / still the case? Please note I am not looking for a debate on the rights and wrongs.

Look forward to reading your catch report and seeing some pics.

carp are a noxious species in Australia so have to be killed if caught.
