Default Big Perch

sad to see some really big perch dead on a small water in the southside of glasgow, seemingly killed by the algal bloom.

A water that i think could beat anywhere for specimens some were over 4 pounds though a bit bloated.

Council didnt bother treating the place...wouldnt happen down south.

Alex,

I think I'm correct in saying that the ACA operates north of the border.

Unlike the EA, they have teeth and will use them in cases like these. They successfully prosecute a few polluters each year.

Either you or the club who controls the water must be a member first though.

for a fee maybe, but ive reported 1 incident of severe pollution once this year to sepa who took 4 days to even meet me then did nothing as the chemical had broken down, on that water there were 5 pound eels dead at my feet. Like i maintain , if it aint got salmon or sea trout no one wants to know...

As far as I'm aware they don't charge - apart from membership (my yearly membership is around £17), which is fair enough - someone has to fund them.

The difference is that SEPA and the EA are underfunded Governent bodies who don't have much clout. I suspect some of the time they are told to "let it lie", especially in the case of big business pollution.

The ACA can and do prosecute, and don't seem worried who they take on.

If it was a natural effect caused by algae, there wont be anyone to sue!
Would be worth looking into incase it was not the algae.
If it was chemical you might have a problem with dogs swimming in it or even kids!!!!
Worth chasing up.

Default Big Perch Deaths

Hi All,
"seemingly killed by the algal bloom."

Was this a "natural event" rather than a pollution incident. Blue green algal blooms are quite widespread now in many Scottish waters through the gradual build of nutrients in many waters. These can lead to fish deaths through contact with algal toxins and de-oxygenation.
Note the " " around natural event.
