Default Unlikely fly?

When dry fly fishing in moving water, one always gets problems with drag. This gets especially bad if having forgotten one's waders, one tries to cast across a fast flowing river. In this scenario I find it helps to put a wet fly on a dropper.

Trying to catch that elusive Wandle trout yesterday, I was getting awful drag problems, so stuck on a wet fly which happened to be a Peter Ross. A couple of casts later and bang! 1 1/2 lb chub on the Rossy. Wonder what Peter Ross would think of his Highland Loch trout fly taking a fat chub in a river in Greater London?

Two 'unfortunately's:- no camera so no photo, & no trout, though he did attack the fly twice (the dry fly). But I'll get you one day you bronze spotty b*&*^&d.
Dave.

Not as unlikely as you might think Dave, the peter ross is a good fry imitation and the chub is a highly predatory fish. Unlucky with the trout though, that will teach you not to forget your waders next time
Good fishing,
Andy.

I once read some theory in a magazine about the Peter Ross imitating hatching buzzers - ever since if the fish seem to be taking emergers or whatever and I can't get them to look at the usual things, I try a Peter Ross. Doesn't always work but when it does it really works.

I once spent hours trying to catch Ide and Orfe which were going mental in the surface and couldn't get them to look at a thing (they're usually pretty easy). Tried the Peter Ross as a last resort and they were throwing themselves at it, literally racing each other to get to it. I've had similar experiences with other species, too.

I would say that if it's going to work, you'll know about it very quickly. If nothing happens quickly, it's not going to!
