Default Head and shouldering bream. Any ideas?

I fished a new water a couple of nights ago and everywhere bream where either taking somthing, i think, just below the surface.
There were mosquitos flying round and a few white sedge. I tried shuttlecock buzzers, emerging sedge, klinkhammers, spiders, PTN's, mosquito dries, midges and a few other things and caught nothing. Not even a sniff.
Perhaps they were feeding on something very speceific and unmatchable? Or I'm doing something very wrong.
Any ideas? Thanks

Richard

When I used to bait fish to see a shoal of Bream rolling in your swim meant they would soon be getting their heads down to feed. I'm quite sure they weren't feeding off the surface.

Thanks Ernie,
That would explain the lack of success. Though they really seemed to be attacking something.

Try something white next chance you get! A white booby on a sinking line works well.

Rolling /head and shouldering fish are feeding fish...on the bottom.

Try white / phospho nymphs. Even golden bead patterns work. Red chiros do it as well.

I fished Ringstead Grange a couple of weeks ago and had an 8lb bream on a floating line with a white booby.

I've had bream to 1 lb on a PTN fished just sub-surface on our local canal.
In fact, I've had every species in there on fly except carp and zander.

This is the Ashby Canal just of the M42. Its very clean (for a canal) and fairly overgrown in parts, and there is a lot of natural food around - I think that makes a difference.

Canal fly-fishing - better than nothing, but not much.

Interesting, as the Ashby canal around Hinckley is horrible, really dirty with way too many boats, I never bother with it, but I do fish the GUC, Cov. Canal and Oxford Canals which are local(ish). I've had bream, zander and carp from these venues but they can be very hard, as i'm sure can your local.
Where is the section you are fishing?
Is this relatively boat free?
Cheers Dee

Very true, a classic sign of bottom feeding bream is bubbles and fish "rolling" on the surface. Quite why they roll I don't know, but they do - perhaps its because they dislodge food whilst nosing on the bottom, eg bloodworm, and chase it up to the top?
