Default Perch

I intend to target a local canal for the large Perch it holds. It's fairly clear for a canal, perhaps 2-3 foot visibility and has a fair amout of weed growth.

Can anyone recomend any likely patters?

Hi Richard, I have heard that tying some red marabou to the treble of a spinner increases its effectiveness for perch, so based on that I would suggest lures with red at the rear of the dressing such as a jack frost.

Any kind of nymph could do it too, perch is for me the easiest fish to hook on a nymph. With it opens its big mouth you can't miss the take.

That's also a good practise for further trout/grayling nymph fishing.

I encounter perch in my trout stream.
The perch sometimes take the small zonker streamer intended for the
brown trout.

The streamer is weighted, black zonker, bead chain eyes, silver chenille body
and a red throat tied in.

A Wooly Buggar in Olive/Black/Purple all take perch very effectively with a gold head in size 12 to 8, with a bit of crystal flash. Strip any fly past a perch with a marabou tale I'm sure will invoke a take, especially around any saught of structure of weed bed.Great side line to the pike FF.

A White glister tadpole with a lime hot head usually does the trick for Stripey's. Remember to use a short wire trace though if there are pike present - you might get fewer takes from the Perch (big stripeys are notoriously shy and a different kettle of fish from the wee chaps) but you will not leave any flies in the Pike should you hook one by mistake.

I had a couple of perch last month in Bewl. Both took close to the bottom about 18ft deep. One took a black buzzer and the other took an olive damsel.

I've caught them on all kinds of patterns, but the thing is to get the flies down deep during the day. At dusk and dawn you may get them closer to the shore in shallower water.

I caught a load, last year on a Sawyer Killer Bug. I believe it's a heavily weighted nymph designed for a quick sink in a small pool and the Perch wouldn't leave it alone.

These three specimens were caught on Diawl Bachs with a red holo rib and red head.

The larger one was Micklen's, the other two mine. All three were barbied and eaten a couple of hours later. Delicious!
