Default where to find pike in lochs

Hi all,

Have been fishing Loch Rannoch recently and have caught some pike and a fair few trout. In calm conditions the pike were willing to take and in rougher conditions the trout obliged with no sign of the pike. I was often fishing the same areas-places I would have expected more pike (they looked 'pikey' to me!) each time. The pike however were mainly small. Any one have any pointers for locating pike (particularly the bigger ones) on the bigger lochs?

Will be heading up to Rannoch again this weekend and would love to tussle with a biggie!

Any advice appreciated,

TS

Hi TS.

What kind of areas were you catching the Pike? You have said 'Pikey' so that would suggest to me you mean shallow bays with weedbeds/reeds/lily pads and other cover? If so, then these are the areas where you will encounter mainly Jacks.

You really need to find some slighttly deeper water with features such as drop offs and plateaux - these are obviously best found from a boat with sounder equipment. These kind of areas are ones which will hold the bigger specimens.

Incidentally, I've found that the rougher the better for productive Pike fishing.

Thanks for the advice Dougie,

It was a shallow area I got the Jacks in. I was fishing from the bank then but was out in the boat the last time and did find some interesting drop offs around the same general area.

I'll give them a try this weekend. Looking at the forecast I think I'll definately have some rough conditions!

Thanks again,

TS
