Default first trip down the river ?

morning all

Im off for my first trip down the river today and need some advice.

So far ive learnt to cast a line but never had a fly on ive got a 7/8# rod and a wf7 floating line and a wf8 intermediate on a reel and spear spool.

The river im going to try has chub roach perch and a few jack pike so how would you go about starting to fish.

thanks
Daz

Hi Dazz, I'm in Leicester too, was out last night (6:30 til 8:30). I had 6 chub between 1 and 2.5lb & a couple of dace, fishing the Soar south of Narborough.
Was the first time I'd fished this stretch but was very impressed, saw some good perch...wouldn't look at my lures, and even a couple of carp(in water that looked trouty?) but no barbel.
I caught by casting to sighted fish...tricky on small overgrown streams, using just simple #12 gold head hairs ear bugs or #10 olive tadpoles with 4mm tungsten beads for the deep holes. Heavy(ish) line too, around 6lb as there are weeds everywhere and chest waders to extract any chub that do make it into the greenery. Bully them hard and you should be abled to stay dry though!
I saw the biggest chub I've ever seen too, and I've had them to about 5 1/2 but this was huge. I though it was a barbel at first, must have been around seven!
This length also looks the best I've seen for trout and I've caught from other less "looking" areas so I'm hopefull and will be concentrating on here this summer.
Let me know where you're planning to fish as I know all the local rivers pretty well (they are all good summer chub/dace fisheries).
Yours Dee

They(the carp that is) were both about ten pounds apeice...would have been lucky to land them on any tackle with the weed everywhere.
Which river did you try?

Hi Dave,
Which bit of the Soar did you spot the big chub and carp on? I fished the Soar in Jubilee Park Whetstone, the other day and had my fist Chub on the fly. Click the image to open in full size.[/IMG] Was one of my home tied daddy patterrns too so was well chuffed. Also had great fun taling small roach on small black gnats.
I live i Cosby so would love to find out which bits of the river around the Narborough area are free to fish.
Cheers.
Sheepy.

Howdy Chaps,

Good to read how successfully folks catch nice coarse fish around my area. I am based in Peterborough and wondering if any of you could advise me where to go if I`d like to catch something on fly. I have got the river Nene here I have just started fishing in but as I am reading there are other good waters nearby within an hour distance by car. I am open to any info. Anyone guiding for beer ?

thanks guys

For small river fishing try the Ivel near Biggleswade, about 40 minutes south on the A1. It's got loads of Chub which run up to 6lbs as well as Barbel to double figures plus roch and Dace but it's weedy and twisty. There are a few trout knocking about in there as well although not many.

Most of the decent stretches are controlled by the IPA (Ivel Protection Association) but any local club membership will qualify.
