forgot to mention one thing happened last winter...I dropped my key to the river (close to boulters lock) while feeding the ducks with my kid. So I put on my waders n got into water (about 1.2m deep) trying to retrieve the key, then when I was looking down to search the piece of metal, a gigantic shadow swam past me from behind and just only a few inches to my calf, yes, it was a 12-15 pounder northern...
never encountered a fish like this before and it set my soul on 'fire' to fish it!!!

Nek ,
Hi ans welcome ,guess from your Northern you mean what we call pike (esox lucius).
You should be able to fish for them from june 16th ,not ntil then as there is a coarse fish closed season till then .
12-15 is a good fish but not huge 20s from the thames is not uncommon !
You will need a rod licence from the EA available on line or at your local post office ,think a lot of the fishing is free but Madenhead is a wee bit up stream for me to be sure !

Thanks Andy, got my license online already and now studying the free fishing section on the Thames nearby...Looks like the island downstream to boulters lock has pretty good reputation, I've seen some boat fishermen got a carp (maybe) about 6,70cm long, too far away to see the details from riverside, but that's surely a big fat beauty.
