Default On the bank ratio for pike

Now we all know that old Esox loves the movement of a pike fly. But single, barbless hooks!!!

How many that you hook do you actually get in the net?

My ratio is maybe 4-1 against.

90+% of those that stick the first 5 seconds.

I think I land most double figure fish and lose about a third jack size fish. I chop the weed guards off the flies because they just dont feel right to me.

I land about 4 out of 5, not using a net. If they're going to come off, it seems to be almost right away. Most of those seem to clamp down so hard on the fly it doesn't get driven home, and when they open their mouth, the fly just pops out.

That's my experience too and I accept it as being part and parcel fly fishing for pike.

If they stick for more than 10 seconds then in my experience the vast majority stay attached.

I spin for pike a lot and all the hooks on my spinners are singles as I have cut off the trebles. I still catch plenty of fish, yes I lose a few now and then but I am not to bothered. Treble hooks can be difficult to remove even worse if the barbs are left on, they are not good for the fish in my opinion.
Have you ever seen some of the big lures on sale with rows of big scary trebles!
I often catch pike on the fly accidently, and they are so much easier to unhook on a single, and no damage is done to the fish.
Keep using singles on your flys far better than trebles, we must look after our fish

I also lure fish for pike (plugs and spinners) and I tend to remove the trebles supplied with these lures and replace them with smaller barbless (crushed barbs) as I find I get a better hook-up ratio and don't lose that many.

I'm planning on fly fishing for pike this year (once I've saved up a few pennies for the rod!). Yet another rod I "need" to buy
