Default Chub East Midlands?

Hi

Ive never had a Chub on any method in fact Ive never seen one, living in Scotland chances are few.

I"ll be travelling down south in a couple of weeks and will have time for session trying for them.

Any suggestions for a day ticket river near the M1? somewhere between Nottingham and Bedford? Also any tips on flies and technique would be great.

Cheers Colin

There is loads of water on the Great Ouse around Bedford which holds loads of chub to decent size. Either try the ouse itself or one of its tributaries like the Ivel near Biggleswade (about 10 miles from Bedford).

I'm not sure oin tactics as I've never fly fished for them but they're quite big, greedy and often predatory if that helps. They'll also be caught on small course baits as well so I guess pretty much anything goes.

Find a local tackle shop who'll tell you the free or day ticket waters as lots of stretches are private or run by local clubs.

Don't forget the coarse fishing season doesn't open until June 16th!

The season on rivers does not start until June 16, but (many) stillwaters are open all year round. The lakes and gravel pits in the Trent valley are worth a shot, especially the ones close to the Trent itself because when the river floods, the fish find themselves washed into all sorts of places, including the lakes

This could be one reason for the Trent`s population of large carp. I have caught many stillwater (and river) chub and found that whilst the river chub could be caught on all manner of flies, especially large bushy dry flies the stillwater fish were easier to catch on lures such as a 5 gram black and gold original floating Rapala minnow (best chub lure ever imho )

Your best bet would be to do a search on the computer for angling clubs in the area you are visiting Shad and drop them an e-mail for info. Hope this helps a little,
Good fishing,
Andy.

Like Andrew says the river coarse season does not start till June 16, but chub can be caught from some stillwaters and canals ( check bylaws some canals are subject to the close season). Chub will happily take a fly, the last one I caught was on a pheasent tail nymph with a gold bead.
