Caught lots of Chub on dries to over 4lb!
Big bushy dries or terrestrials worked well!
Only in summer though!

Had a few trips to the Derbyshire Derwent at Borrowash a few years back. The chub were suckers for Grey Dusters. I reckon any dry fly would work in summer though, they're not so nearly as fussy as trout. Try a Griffiths Gnat.

Bushy dries in summer, I live on the Derwent (Derby) and they are a nightmare when you try and catch some browns and greyling!

If you are out for some fun targeting them, damsel nymphs and taddys works great.

Caught a 6 pound one on size 10 pink nymph, again while fishing for greyling in December.

Felt like trying to pull a shopping trolly out of river with my #4 rod!

Hello there,

Read this article and follow the links there: Winter Fishing

Also Chubby Fishing - The chub is amongst the many fresh water speciesthat can be taken on a fly - Global FlyFisher

I would not waste too much time on tying difficult patterns. Stick with hare's ear nymph tied with a partridge or CDC hackle and various weight and colour heads. If you read through the linked topics then in one of them I posted a picture of my tadpole. That is a cracking fly. I do not do too much dry fly fishing for chub nowadays. When I fancy I tend to use polybeetle (in the Summer) or various parachute patterns or sedge (abundant in my waters). Typical size is between 12 and 16.

Keep reading through the topics under the other species section and you will find loads of info. I must admit with chub the stealthy approach is far more important than the fly itself, at least in my experience. Also, sometimes they want it presented gently sometimes they want an audible plop.

Yours,

Pete

For heart stopping excitment try a small popper. The takes can be explosive. I have found that back eddys can be very productive.

If your stream is tree lined try a leaded beetle pattern. Its the "PLOP" that gets 'em. My favourite beetle pattern is a 12s wide gaped hook. A layer of lead wire. Peacock or Ostrich Herl for the body and a back of either a strip of black plastic, black raffia or Crystal flash in Peacock (Black with reds, blues and greens in it).

On the subject of hooks. I use hooks that are designed for pellets. These are very strong and sharp (you may find the hook size a bit on the strange side). Have a look in the Coarse Fishing section of your local tackle dealer. You will find the selection a bit mind boggling but, if you speak with the dealer and tell him what kind of hook you're looking for it'll save you a lot of time. Don't be put off by any strange looks you may get when you tell him what you want.

Go get 'em.

Frithy

A big bushy daddy cast under trees can prove almost irresistable. But as already mentioned be stealthy. One sight of you and ol rubber libs will be scooting off downstream.
