Default My home state - North Carolina

http://www.ncwildlife.org/

The striped bass season on the Roanoke River is just ending. It can be a bit of a zoo sometimes, and if you make someone really angry, maybe they shoot you, but it is a world class fishery. For flyfishing, unless you are in shallower water, you need to be able to get deep quickly.

Fish in the 30 lb range are not unusual, and they can get bigger than that. I think that the shad run is just a little bit earlier, and there may be some overlap.

I think that this link will get you to the general wildlife department site, where you can choose the site of interest.

Note that North carolina offers some thousands of miles of trout streams at the other end of the state, plus a wide variety of saltwater and brackish water fisheries. These range from site fishing for redfish in the sounds, to blue water fishing in the Gulf Stream (marlin, tuna, mahi mahi, etc.).

Note that North Carolina requires no written test for a fishing license, even for Germans.

Hi Grant. I note you're in Dusseldorf. I bet you wish you were in the States now. So do I, or indeed almost anywhere but London. The only fishing I can do is on the canal - slow, or for stocked trout - expensive. Tomorrow I may head down to the Thames below the flood barrier, where its classed as sea fishing. The thing is, I doubt I will be fly fishing there. Its a bit early for the mackerel and I don't think many bass ride that far upstream. Will probably be eels & flatfish. Unless someone knows otherwise? North Carolina? Give my regards to Daisy Duke!
Cheers
Dave.

Default one more link for you

http://www.oregon-inlet.com/activity.cfm

Most of these are not fly fishing, but you can get a taste of NC bluewater fishing from this site.

By the way, Duesseldorf is a nice place to live, and while I don't get to fish as often as in the States, I have had a few very very good trips here. It just takes a little more effort. Good luck finding something reachable from London - lots of places you can fly to for cheap from Stanstead.

Cheers!

Default Asheville...

Some nice fishing around the Asheville area I understand. Was there a couple of years ago (no fishing alas), and certainly looked to lots of potential.

What about Lake Norman... must be some top fishing there....

Default Lake Norman

Largemouth bass, spotted bass, crappie, yellow perch, striped bass, catfish, carp - not the most fertile warm water fishery in North Carolina, but in my youth I caught a few fish there. It has become sort of an upscale suburb of Charlotte, and is more developed than it was many thousands of years ago when I was a kid. It can be very good if you know where to go, and maybe just a pleasant day in the sun if you do not. I recommend hiring a guide for a day.

Lake James, an impoundment a little bit further upstream, has a cool water fishery that includes smallmouth bass, walleye, and a few muskies in addition to the warm water species. It has a tailwater fishery for trout.

A little bit further up into the mountains is Lake Lure, which is a fun place to rent a house for a week. It has a lot of fish, Largemouth and smallmouth bass plus trout, catfish, bream, etc, but the water is extremely clear and they are hard to catch. I took a sit on top kayak with me, which was ideal. A canoe would get blown all over the lake, I am not so fond of motorboats except for ocean fishing.

In Asheville, there are some outstanding trout fisheries in Pisgah National Forest, which is not too far, plus the French Broad goes right through Asheville, and is an excellent muskie fishery.

Hope that helps.

Cheers!
