Flybysage is on a distinguished road
Default Fly piking at Haliford Mere

Hi all, I have been in contact by Brian, the fishery manager, and he has asked me to announce that Fly fishing for pike is now available on a day ticket basis!
There will obviously be rules to abide to, correct tackle must be used and handling of the pike is a priority. Please see the statement below:

"The trout lakes at Halliford hold a healthy head of pike, a fact most of the regular trout
anglers can attest to, and they're not tiddlers either! Based on this, the decision has been
taken to allow fly fishing for pike on the trout lakes. It will be on a day ticket, strictly catch
and release basis, prices the same as for the trout fishing.

Pike are a fragile creature, even though they are at the top of the food chain in British
waters, and as such, strict guidelines will have to be adhered to: rods of 9' #8 or 9 min;
leader min 15lb; wire trace of 12" min; barbless/debarbed #2/0 or bigger single hook flies,
no shorter than 4" (to avoid hooking the rainbows and browns); suitable landing nets;
unhooking mat; long handled forceps/pliers; unhooking glove. Mis-handling of the fish can result
in its death, so ensure it is fully recovered before allowing it to swim away. A close season will
be enforced to allow the pike to spawn, and to recover after spawning. This may vary from year
to year, but is likely to be last 2 weeks in Feb, and all of Mar.

Fly fishing for pike is becoming more popular in Britain, though few commercial trout fisheries
allow it. It is hoped that this fishery can produce good sport for those anglers keen to pursue
this branch of fly fishing."

As most of the regulars already know, there is a large pike presence in all of the lakes and in especially in lakes 1,2 and 3 where these fish have not been fished for!
Anyway, get your fly piking gear out and head to Haliford for some fun! Get in before the spawning starts!!

Any questions, contact Brian on 07791 254 711
