Default scruffy divers

I'm not the greatest when it comes to spun deer hair and more ends.up on the table than the hook but I've just knocked these up

More practice needed but hopefully they should raise a few hits come spring

look a lot better than my efforts!
Do you find these colours outfish others?
As with everything I realise there are many components but I struggle with bright colours on all the waters I fish..although the pike on the same waters will take brightly coloured lures ( spinners etc)

You can buy a little tool that pushes the deer hair up to get a tighter look?

However, yours will catch plenty of fish, but the heads will soon fill with water and may sink, and fall apart in the pike teeth quicker. All you need is to get the deer hair a little tighter and the flies will be perfect.

Well done on a first attempt.

Hi Mart.

Not bad heads those. Practice, practice, and more practice. That's the way to improve. To give you a start, try and get hold of a book : Bass Bug Basics by John M. Likakis (ISBN 0-88150-613-3). This book gives you "Simple Techniques for tying Deer Hair Flies" and is full of very good advice.

They were first attempts, I don't have a brassie hair packer so used a pen lid instead.

A second attempt

I posted this in the fly tying section but it was an experiment and a bit more practice.

A few more froggy patterns next and a few with weed guards
