The Rio Pike Line is a superb line if you want a floater.

If you want to cast large flies with the minimum of effort then the Rio Outbound Short is the line to go for imo.

What is the difference between a line for pike fishing and a "normal" one?

I guess its to do with the bigger flies but what attributes does a pike line need?

I'm using a Pirate inter but need to get a floater as well, I think, for varying presentation.

I would say you dont care about presentation but need to cast a large fly far away for pike. Lines with short bodies do the job well, thats why pike specialist lines often have a 9 to 11 meter long head. Rio outbound is in the same range and it is a good choice. My favorite RW TT Ambush, however, is even shorter, I believe it has a 6.5 meter long head. Get it and be surprised how easy your life become.

There is a similar thread cooking along at the moment, and out of interest it led me to measure the profile of a £3.99 mullarkeys mill end WF10F, which prior to a cortland 444 pike rocket taper jobbie was my pike line.

Interesting to see the rio outbound states a 30' head, but is by all accounts a 'short head' line ? By comparison, the £4 mill end is as follows, I have measured it with a vernier and tape measure;

Front taper ~ 2.5ft
Belly ~ 23ft
Rear taper ~ 4.5ft
