Here is the link to Rio that lists the Outbound Shorts with the head weights next to each # line , very helpful and wish all companies would list like this >>>>>

I would def recommend that you go up a line rating,it will help,it's a no brainer casting big flies all day is a lot harder than casting trout flies.Also a lot of people try to cast pike flies and lines as if they are casting a tiny dry fly,this is ok on say a small river or canal but on a lake or lough casting a long line will get you a few more fish,pike often follow flies a long way before attacking.For an all rounder i would go for a Guideline sink1/sink3 intermediate it has the perfect taper (bullet taper) for large flies and it will cover 90% of your pike ff needs.

Hope this helps

Regards Stuart.

I have a Greys 10 weight carnivore, tried 3 floating lines on it so far.
The first was a john norris big fly 10# , nice line for £10 but too short in the head for me.
Next a Cortland pike fly in a 10#, slightly better but not quite right. ok for short distances eg. canal.
Finally a Rio pike 10# this has a 42.5 ft head and may be slightly over weight but casts big flies quite a way. (at last) I dont think its as overated as the short outbounds.
hope the above helps someone from spending too much cash on lines.
Bought the Rio from Pikeshack, good service and price.
Now can anyone recomend a di 7 for the above rod?

Heavier rods are not happy with just 30ft of rated line. I cast 28 to 40ft / 350gr heads with true 10wt rod but longer heads are slightly heavier.

This is a shooting head weight list which I found about 20 years ago:
5wt=160gr
6wt=190gr
7wt=225gr
8wt=260gr
9wt=300gr
10wt=350gr
11wt=420gr
12wt=500gr

Many new rods ask heavier heads to feel the same as older rods. Or more functional way to think is that old heads can be casted with lighter rated modern rods

Mart.

Most pike/bass lines are front end agressive. So unless you have very limited back space, I would stick to the line weight of the rod.

You will hear people talking about over-lineing rods, but it's mostly on small rivers were space is limited and you need the extra weight.

It can also help if you have a very stiff rod, were you find it difficult to 'feel' the line on the backcast. Stick with the proper line weights for your rods.
