Default Shootin Head for pike

Hi Guys

I like to keep things simple and just use bog standard WF lines on my Vision GT Four SW 9' 9wt super rod so powerful yey extremely sensitive even with a fish of a couple of pounds

Yesterday i got the chance to play with a 330gn shooting head (30ft) made from a millend DT #11 line cut in half it was set up on Airflo running line.

I have to say i was very impressed !

Ive no idea as to what weight shooting head i should be using on my rod but im getting the chance to try a 300gn, 350gn even a 390gn really looking forward to seeing how they go.

Interested to hear from others who use shooting heads weight ? rods ?

shooting heads are not pretty but for pike fly fishing they are useful, especially with sinking lines.
the beauty of them is you can make two out of a double taper and get the length of head just right for you and your rod.
even if I had the same rod it would be doubtful we would both get on with the same head length. due to differnet casting styles and the line speed each person can create.
I like a longish head as I seem to get better turn over. although a shorter head is handy when you have limited room for your back cast.
I dont know your rod but I would be tempted to buy a ten weight so it loads the rod quicker, which in turn allows you to have a shorter head.
pretty cheap to experiment if you buy mill ends.
hope some of the above makes sense , dave
ps. forgot to add dont chop off too much initially, its hard to add it later! best to start with the head a bit too long till you are sure you want to take more off.

Cheers for that mate

I was out again today playing with lines ..........same rod Vision GT Four SW 9' 9wt

Lines and results as follows plus weight of 30ft head.

WF9# 15g-240gn My standard line shoots well enough.

WF10# 19g- 293gn This line shot very well better than my WF9#

330gn shooting head This baby flys !

Rio 4/5 switch 15g-231gn This line went pretty well but it didnt pull out the running line like the others.

370gn shooting head This line over powered the rod something terrible !

Out of interest Vision seem to suggest a 324gn shooting head for this weight rod, from what ive seen they where spot on.

Interesting stuff playing with lines and rods
