Thumbs down Pike on the fly?

If you're fly-fishing for pike, using say a few feet of 20lb line and then 9-12" of pro-leader (or other knottable wire), and you hook an immovable snag, in a position you can't wade to (in other words, you're gonna lose your fly), what's going to break? With me, it was the braided loop, which was annoying. Any suggestions please?

Dave.

Did your braided loop open, snap or come off the flyline ?

I use "Roman Moser" salmon grade braided loops for additional strength - and whip them onto both ends of my fly line using UTC Ultra thread, (very strong stuff) ensuring that the whipping is tight enough to cause the braid to bite into the fly line exterior coating, and then coating the whipping with UV resin (or Aquasure) or waterproof super glue.

Keeping the overall length of your mono leader + wire trace, shorter than your rod length will help to prevent any loosening of the braid - by means of your tip ring "peeling it off " the fly line when retrieving, especially when a large fish is being chinned or netted.

"Pulling for a break" with my tackle usually involves wrapping my fly line around my arm, over my clothes - and pulling like hell to snap the 26 pound Rio hard mono at a knot - fingers are just not up to the job

HTH ..... Tony
