Default Perch on the "fly"

Have a club water where the Perch regularly go to 3lb. Has lots of small silver fish but usually catch the Perch on float fished prawn.

I'd love to give it a go with a fly....there's room to cast and i tie my own flies.

Worth a go ? Got some polystickles and a few lures. Any suggestions ?

Thanks in advance

Andy

Definately worth a go. I regularly fish for Perch on poppers during the summer. If you want to target the bigger fish then don't be afraid to use big flies. I catch big Perch regularly on 2/0 flies when Pike fishing.

simonb and jevs.

I sometimes have a play with the Cyprinids on the Fly and catch most species, but, maily on small nymphs or even tiny dries. great sport can be had here's a couple of pics for you, a Perch my client caught one day and a Rudd, one of 20 caught in an hour in a lake on a tiny size 22 black nymph.

Hi,

Have caught loads of Perch inadvertently whilst trout fishing. Most have been on buzzers so might be worth trying those.

Never disappointed when I catch one, I think they are lovely fish.

Nick.

Lures, Damsels will all catch Perch, they're pretty tasty too, much better than trout.

I ve taken some really big perch on Pitsford and Grafham and they have always taken a red hot head dawl bach's, I keep catching them so they clearly like it! Tie them on a size 10 with glo brite or flu. floss in orange or red. I ll put a photo on later of one and the fly.

Regards,

Ed

Flies with some red in them do very well for perch, presumably as it triggers a response like other predators.

All good suggestions above! My findings are that fish to 2lb will take surprisingly small flies, I'd start with a big damsel or minnow pattern on a 6's, if you only take small fish go BIG! By big I mean small Pike flies up to 5in in length(remember wire if Pike are present), my biggest perch went 3lb 8oz and took a big fly tied on a 3/0. I took a fish just over 2lb yesterday on a 5/0 pike fly, they are greedy!

Also when tying flies weight them nose heavy, Perch love a jiggy action!

Good luck!

Red for me to. Size 14-16 hares ear type, gold bead with anything bright red for a collar. I fish two at a time about 2' apart and often get two Perch at once.

If the lake is bait fished quite heavily then something like an Okey Dokey might work (as a maggot imitation). Or as said above any type of fry / baitfish imitation, minkies, sparklers etc. Orange has always been a good colour for me, but I think that water colour may have some effect (the places I perch fish are fairly coloured)
