Default Snakehead Bite to improve over the next few months.

As the year grinds to an end, and the waters clear there will be an improvement in the Snakehead bite. Particularly during the Spring when they will pair up to spawn in the shallows. This is when you can see them the best. That's not to say you cannot catch them now, as you can! Specific area hot spots are emerging, and particularly where they feel safe and secure. Remember, whilst the Snakehead is an ambush predator, and lies normally within 6 inches of the bank, its senses are highly attuned. Long accurate casts and stealth are required.

Enjoy the photos from my last forays.

I read in the latest copy of Classic Angling that this species was illegally introduced into US waters (possibly unwanted pets) and so far the attempt to eradicate it has been unsuccessful as they can survive out of water for some time and also travel over land; if they spread to main water systems like the Great Lakes or Mississipi it would be more serious than illegal introductions like Asian carp. It says they are asking anglers to kill all snakeheads they catch.

You are quite right in what you say. As with a lot of different species, both Fish and Animal, they were illegally introduced into the canals etc., and now there is very little chance of eradicating them all. However, they are a challenge to catch, and add to the variety of species available to the Urban Angler. Along with Peacock Bass, Tilapia, Cichlids, Jaguar Guapote, Pacu, and Grass Carp which all have been introduced at one point or another. Some However like the Grass Carp are a weed control measure and are stocked as Triploids by the FWC. I believe the Snakehead is a great tasting fish, so get your cooler, complete with ice, and catch your dinner!

They must have been in Florida a while as Walt Disney covered them. Undoubtedly some, the smaller species, were aquarium fish that outgrew their tanks; but the finger of suspicion points mainly at ethnic Asian wholesale suppliers and restaurants from where they are mostly sold alive.

Thank you very much for that. It is most interesting to see it in print from Disney. You are quite right however, as Jeremy Wade pointed out, it would seem that they were introduced for commercial purposes, and now have spread East and West along the interconnected canals.

Apparently very true; this is how they first got here ... being imported (illegally) into the US as delicacy food fish.

At the last Snakehead roundup, the organisers brought deep fried snakehead complete with sweet chilli dipping sauce. Very Nice.
