Default Pike and Carp on the fly

Hello everyone, I havent now been fishing since i was 16 and am now 38. I used to specimen hunt for carp and pike having had three twenties in one winter season the biggest being 28lb 12oz from a lake near worksop notts.. I have the chance to fish the private stretch of a great estate and the only fishing i think i could do now is fly fish as ity is more actave that specimen hunting. I can happily sit in a hide pigeon shooting but cant find the patience to sit there with the carp rods out. I would like someone to set me off on the right road regarding pike and carp fishing on the fly. I have had a go at Chatsworth game fair casting etc and enjoyed that.. What I would like to know is what rods, reels, line, leaders, traces etc i would need to start up. I have no knowledge of fly fishing realy and localy to me there are no proffesionals that I know of. Can anyone set me straight ie with products, names etc.

Carp.... Wide open water you will have great fun on a 6/7. If you need to give them some stick then 7/8, snag pits 8/9.

Pike.... Depends what you are trying to chuck out, but generally #9 +

Had plenty of luck with carp, still trying to bag a pike!

For Pike i use an #8/9 rod,Abel super 8,Snowbee intermediate pike line,20lb mono to wire trace about 9" long with a big horrible soggy fly on the end.
The Snowbee line is particularly good for getting out those wet weighty flies.
Happy hunting.

Hi Stuart, lots of info on here about pike on fly....Charity event 2011 - PIKE FLY- FISHING ASSOCIATION
Not much info about Carp.
Casting lessons are worth every penny they cost, speak to the instructor. to discuss the species you are after.

I've been doing a bit of predator fishing on the fly.

This site is pretty good:

Home - PIKE FLY- FISHING ASSOCIATION

Yes, Snowbee lines are great, need something heavy to chuck 6 inches of web bunny fur out...but yet to find a good place to buy lures that don't want to charge you an arm and a leg...
so if you tie your own trout lures but on a size 4/0 or 6/0 then they seem to work ok

You get perch on this method too.

Not surprised you get perch on a size 4 or 6.

I tie my pike flies on a 4/0 or 6/0 and so do most of the pike fly fishers I know.

Look at the size of the mouth on a pike - this is only about 5lbs or 6lbs, but it took a 6" dressing on a 4/0. If a pike is eating roach 6" - 8" long, why offer it a minnow?

one thing i do when tying a carp biscuit fly, i tye it upside down so the hook is hidden in the deer hair.carp can be shy of the hooks so hide it on some waters ive found this and the fly is weighted by the hook and sits a bit lower in the water too. try it.
