Hi Guys

I was stumbling around the web came across this

www.baghdadflyfishing.com

Got to love those yanks ............never mind the fly vest , its a bullet proof one they need

Perhaps the invasion was worth while after all if only they'd told us the mission was to bring fly fishing to the Arabs But jokeing aside im amazed by the fish species they have over there and the quaility

There was an article a couple of years ago about British troops carp fishing in Iraq. They where based in what had been one of Saddam's palaces. An ornamental lake in the grounds had been stocked with carp.

50 degrees at 19:55hrs.

Imagine having to wear all that body armour and walk about in that heat...horrendous.

There are brown trout in the headwaters of the Euphrates and Tigris; but I suspect the Bagdhad flyfishermen club don't stray too far

The shots of Asp and Carp are what I expected; but not 'exotic' Barbus species.

Barbus esocinus The 'Bisz' or 'Mangar'.

Barbus grypus The 'Shaboot'

All fly caught - nice.

I had a cheap multi-section spinning rod. The sort of thing about 6' long, comes with a fixed spool reel already lined. It went twice to Iraq. With a friend's son on Telic 2 and fished in Saddam's palace lake and then came back to UK and then later with a another friend's son and it fished the Tigris.

Fish below caught by friend whilst serving in Iraq, taken from one if the palace lakes, estimated at between 70 - 80lb and IMHO very underestimated.
