Default Pumpkinseeds!

Has anyone else caught these on the fly?

On my local syndicate, one of the lakes is absolutely chock-a-block with them, in good weather you see them sunning themselves in big shoals. They don't grow huge, but are fun to catch on light tackle and GHs.

If you catch them, please do make sure the lake is aware of their presence (especially so if you find them in a river) as they are an alien species.

They are very good to eat, no restrictions as they are an'invasive non native species 'INNS'.

I suspect the specimen pictured is a 'bluegill' not a 'pumpkinseed'. Sunfish biology and identification: Minnesota DNR

Pumpkinseeds are very similar to that of a bluegill, and are often found in the same habitats. One difference between the two species is their opercular flap. The flap is black in both species, but the pumpkinseed has a crimson spot in the shape of a halfmoon on the back portion of its opercular flap. Pumpkinseeds have 7-8 vertical irregular bands on their sides that are duller in colour compared to the bluegill.
From Wikipedia, so it must be right

Never seen one, however there is a Sussex fishery that has prolific amounts of them and i think its a day ticket fishery. They have certainly been present for some considerable years.

It's a bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) without a shadow of a doubt. I've caught scores of these on the fly and using all kinds of bait. These were all in South Florida though and certainly not here!

They do need reporting.

Most of the dams in Cyprus now have pumpkinseeds, they are very easy to catch on the fly , best to move the fly fast .
