Default Terminal Tackle for Pike

I've started fly fishing for pike but am finding that my terminal tackle is not up to the job.

My problem is that I want to use a snap swivel to attach my fly to the wire trace. I've tried a selection of these (various varieties from Glasgow Angling Centre) but they keep getting straightened.

I tried some heavy duty sea links and whilst they didn't get straightened, they were obviously too big as there was a noticeable decrease in takes.

At the moment, I am just tying hard nylon leader direct to the fly but its costing me a fortune as I need to cut into it every fly change.

Can anybody recommend smallish snap swivels that they trust to handle big pike on the fly?

Cheers.

You could take a look at the carp fishing fraternity...........Korda do some nice little clips that handle whopping great carp (other brands are available). Should be a piece of cake for pike.............birdsnest

They do exist if you look around. Dave Lumbs site has the best selection in the UK, I think:

Swivels and Snaps - Items - DLST Online Shop

The smaller Stay-lok snaps and Fastachs are both very reliable, and light enough. Smart-lock snaps also work well if you can find reliable stainless steel ones not cheapies.

Try Savage Gear Softflex Wire. You can avoid swivels altogether as you can tie knots in the stuff and its super durable and low kink. Its a little on the pricey side but far better than the cheaper stuff like Easy Twist. Having said that, I think a swivel can be used to impart a different action into the fly, just depends on how you're fishing.

Try the Authanic wire. It is supple (as supple as braid) and can be knotted - it does take a bit of practise to knot it, but it works.

For quick changes I use crosslocks, NO SWIVEL, just tie the cross lock onto the end of your wire (or haywire twist it in single strand) and that's it.
