Default Flyfishing Netherlands, jan. 19th.

Despite the extremely lousy weather today (it is expected to rain continuously for 72 hrs) we went out to our favorite pike pond this morning.
During the low light conditions in the morning we could not spot any action in the water.
Not only the low light but strong winds and continuous showers roughened up the waters surface.

Later in the morning we spotted fleeing baitfish and both managed to hook and land a pike.
I was using the light rod again with a red/yellow streamer which was in fact a steelhead fly from a set I once purchased during a fly sale.
The pike I got was a small one but a welcome sight since action was kind of slow.

Pike on small streamer.

I managed to hook a larger fish in another pond but unfortunately that fish came off at the last minute.
At the end of our session I had another run in with the pike.
While fishing along a wall I missed the strike of a pike, since the fish had not felt the hook I fished the spot for a second time and once again missed the strike.
So the weather was terrible but the fish was biting and off course almost everybody else wasted time by staying home

The rod in question is a superfine trout bum 4 weight rod and is
capable of launching the small lures I use in the ponds.

Default Pike fishing in Holland

Marcel,
Nice fish, nice picture and you prove that effort pays off.
I was in holland over Christmas but the local lakes still had ice on them.
I will be back late March. Is fly fishing for pike (snook!) allowed then since it is their breeding time?
I have seen some serious pike in the shallows in Holland in the Spring. Big enough to scare me.
There was one spot reserved for over 55s, so it was a popular spot. There was a resident pike there, which waited for returned fish. You could even touch it with your rod. It would swim away and two minutes later it was back.
If you continue pike fishing in Holland you might find you eventually need a stronger rod!
Regards
Rusty

Nice one Marcel. I wish I could get a pike on the fly! I've followed advice on this forum so I start by spinning, then when I get a hit, I know where the pike are, so go over to my fly rod, but never seem to get them. Obviously using a spinner with a treble, when I get that hit I usually get the fish, so maybe that's got something to do with it. I've been followed to the bank & once had a take on the fly, which I missed. Still, I'll keep trying. Can't wait for trout season however.
Tight lines.
Dave.
