Default Pike leaders

I am interested to know what kind of setup people use to catch pike on. I am starting to get interested in pike fly fishing and I have no experience in this area and would like some simple advice for a leader setup.

I have a Shakespeare single-handed 9' trout rod with 8 AFTM saltwater fly line.

I was thinking about connecting the fly line to this leader:

9 foot leader with a 4" or 8" re-twistable haywire versions attached with a shock absorbing hand-tied Bimini knot. A duo-lock snap is included.

What does the 4" and 8" mean? Does this mean that the wire is 4" and 8" long?

Also, what knot should I use to connect the backing to the fly line......And how should I connect the fly line to the connector, and what connector should I use? (If you understand that lol)

Also would you recommend Tyger Stainless Steel Leaders?

If so, what breaking strain would you use, either 15lb or 30lb....and how long either 10ft or 30ft?

Just chop a piece of the tyger wire off maybe 12" and tie it to your fly and leader, no need for the whole length It knots up pretty well.

nail knot the backing to the fly line and then nail knot the leader to the front of the fly line.

Above is my latest setup.

Consists of 12 -14" of 35lb wire from http://www.eddieturner.co.uk/product...w&productid=24
I prefer to crimp but it's knottable. I also use the single strand Titanium from the same source.
The business end has an MCF safety link onto which you clip the fly. Slide down a piece of silicone tubing to the hook eye as a safety precaution.
The other end has an oval rig ring attached and shrink tube the crimp.
Finally just knot the rig ring to your 6' -10' of 20lb - 25lb mono leader.
Fly changes in seconds!!

I also use a similar set up for fishing spinners and lures but using a bigger safety clip at the business end.
I've been using this set up since early September and landed a dozen or so pike to 17lb 06oz and probably over 150 Zander to 12lb 10oz and with no problems.

imho a leader of 9' is toooo long for Pike fishing. I use a very simple set up - approx 1.20m of 0.45mm mono for the butt section, and approx 30cm of either .80mm Hard mono or 15ib Tyger wire (not leaders!!) as a shock tippet fixed to the butt with an Albright knot; @ the business end I use either a mirror lure knot or a Homer Rhode Loop Knot to attach the fly.

I have used hard mono as a tippet material for years and it wasn't until about two months ago that I had my first bite-off, followed shortly after by a second. I personally prefer Hard Mono as a shock-tippet but Tyger wire is a good alternative.

Me and my pike hunting ff friends have caught dozens of Pike (many of them over 10Kg) on this set up during the past few years, all of them except for one use HardMono.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I was thinking about using this method

Scroll down about half way and you'll come to a diagram.

I use Orvis Fluro in 39lb or 80lb.

Never had a bite off yet.

Hi Foxy - I use home-made shooting heads, the loop2loop connection is fine. I used to use loop2loop to connect the shock tippet on, I have recently changed to using an albright ...

... I dont use wire so I cannot comment. If I did I would use 15lb Tyger wire and knot it.
