It is allowed and you will have no problem catching shoal perch. Anything with a touch of red and or silver will do the trick.
The bigger ones are a bit more crafty though and a great challenge on fly.

The answer is yes and yes. Englander has put up some really good posts on the this subject so do a search on his name. I've found that shiny, colored nymphs or small lures and streamers with some flash tend to work best. You might want to hold on to that 7' 4 weight you've advertised since that is a perfect rod for perch. You'll find them in both canals and rivers just try and find some structure where they can hide. Perch will give you a very good fight on light tackle and if you happen to hook into a big one (pound or more) then you're in for a real fun time. Just be careful on the hook up as the mouth is very fragile.

Take care

Terry

Thankyou to everyone for your excellent replies, I have a fishing club near me that apparently has some good perch in their lakes (and very nice lakes too!) so I'll contact them and see if I can get a permission to fish. I already have a #6 set up that'll do for the lakes so I'll keep the #4 in the sales section, but thankyou for the advice once again.

It seems there's also perch to be caught in the free beat of the Itchen, bonus!

Hi fliedpiper yes you can fly fish for perch. They are probably one of the easiest of the coarse fish to catch on the fly. Here is small one I caught the other day on a gold bead pheasant tail nymph. They are great sport on a light fly rod!

They take flies with vigour! Not the best fighting fish, but enjoyable to catch and quite pretty

Just watchout for 'orrible little jack pike biting off your fly
If there are large numbers of pike it might be worth while using a trace.
