Default Help selecting pike fly rod.

Hello, I´m new in this forum, and this is my first post. I´m from Spain, (sorry my english)and one of my passion is flyfishing for pike.

Normaly I fishing with a 9wt rod, but after reading some post in this forum, and a bad experiencie last year with a monster pike that I lost, I like upgrade my tackle to a 10wt rod.

I have in my mind some rods, Greys saltwater XD, Redington rs4 or CPX, Pikesaber from Piketrek, Echo Ion... can give me advice? or tell me anthoer rod?

Greetings.

I use the greys xf2 carnivore in a #9 but use #10 lines on it, really nice rod the saltwater xd is brilliant also, i find the carnivore a bit stiffer. If your budget is around the £200 mark you wont go far wrong with either of those rods imo.

I use the Redington CPX 9ft - 10# for my fly piking, with which I am extremely pleased.

Last week I boated a 28 pound personal best (ever) Pike using that rod - and it was well up to the job - even though I could feel it bending into the cork handle

In 4 piece #10, a rod built on the Harrison 9' #9/10 blank, or the new TFO BVK 9' #10 blank would be my choice. Build your own to save some money and make it exactly as you like? It's not too difficult. Otherwise there are people who build in the UK on the Harrison blank or you can buy the TFO built to a decent standard directly from the US.

BVK Series

The cheaper and slightly heavier TFO Professional or (faster action) TCR are also good rods that will handle big fish.

On a budget, the Shakespeare Salt 9' #10 is meant to be very good for the money but only 3 piece I believe and perhaps not as robust in the butt section.

You need to consider the action that you like. Most people prefer med-fast which allows easier timing and wider loops for huge flies, however others like fast action which works better with short heavy shooting heads if your casting action suits that and it can provide more distance with less effort.

Having said all that, a good quality #9 (probably a saltwater model) should give you enough power for anything less than a monster pike with a bad attitude or heavy snags. They use them for medium Tarpon which could be 80lb and make 100 yd runs and 10ft jumps! As a matter of interest for everyone here, which rod let you down? My own 9' #9 (Vision SW med-fast) feels pretty bullet proof for river pike up to 17lb and with plenty in reserve that I have felt when winching in underwater trees that I snag flies in.

Good luck and feel free to PM me for more.

Thanks for answer and recommendations.

Hopper333, I build my own casting rods for fishing largemouht bass, but my little girl is eating all my time now. But is another good option.

I´m flyfishing with Gloomis Glx 9' 9wt, have plenty reserve of power but since lost this 25lbs class pike I think that 10wt rod can be better, because the fight was large and finaly lost in a laydown.

I´m fishing in a river, with plenty of cover, most of the time from float tube, and I think that 10wt can help to this close combat. I dont need make large cast, and I think that medium fast rods is better for my style of fishing.

Greys xd saltwater, and Echo Ion(I see this rod in Musky fishing dvd Zero2hero), are rated like medium fast rods, and the price is good

Greetings.
