Could you let me know what fly you took it on? A friend and I have been trying to target chub on the river Wandle with no joy as of yet, it might be that they are just too wise to make the mistake of going for a fly on the stretch we are fishing or we could simply be using completely the wrong pattern.

Try a GRHE 'klink'n'dink' style. Flat gold tinsel on a 14 Grub hook worked on my local Chub (and Trout!).

I have found anything dry small black and bushy to work well.

HI I havnt had the oppertunity to fish a shallow river with barbel in it with any numbers of barbel. This smalll brook has some barbel in it but I havnt hooked one yet.
I am sure large dragon fly or damsel fly nymph patterns like I have used on the chub will catch barbel. I am not sure if the 2wt rod will cope with a barbel though they dont half pull.....
